Ideas Analysis

Idea 1 - The Elements

S

I have come up with a solid, singular Idea for this theme. The levels are essentially themed rooms, so this will be easy to create and less time consuming than my other ideas. I have mind-mapped this theme and come up with some solid endings to choose from that should be easy to re-create in the engine.

W

I might not be able to find the appropriate assets for this project such as the fire, ice, effective smoke and the detailed materials.

I am worried about the ice stage as I'm not too sure how I would go about creating the blueprint for the ice, making the player ski around the room and making the movement fluid.

O

This gives me an opportunity to learn the blueprints and learn how to make these different effects that may or may not work with the ice room. Maybe I can make my game more fluid by learning and using these blueprints.

These blueprints can help me move onto coding as blueprints is essentially a dumb down version of coding.

T

Unreal is known to crash plenty of times, especially with me. i may run into loss of work, crashes, computer freezes, failure to save my project at all, rendering issues, or FPS drop depending how many assets I have in my project.

Idea 2 - Fantasy

S

It is outdoors which I am very good at planning. I know how to make landscapes very effective and hopefully with the correct assets at hand I can make my landscape look more real. This idea has a purpose other than it being a walking simulator, you have to collect gems which gives the player something to do with the freedom of walking in the environment

W

I might struggle to find the appropriate assets online when making this in Unreal Engine 4. Because of this being based on fantasy, I might struggle to find and code in the goblins. I wanted the goblins to walk around the area, guarding the gems, but due to my lack of knowledge on coding, this may consume most of my production time.

O

If I plan my time effectively, I may be able to make a simple script for the walking goblin. This at-least gives me more knowledge on using blueprints. I have a book called "Unreal Engine Blueprints" which should help me make the blueprints I need. Not all assets are free on the UE4 marketplace, however, there are websites online, which I can take as an opportunity to get some detailed static meshes.

T

I might run out of time trying to code the AI movements which is time I can't lose especially in FMP. I might run into bugs and issues with the blueprints I have made which could break my game enough for it to not work anymore. And then, I have to worry about crashes.

Idea 3 - Real sm

S

This is My main idea which I am leaning more towards for my Project. I have plenty of ideas to add and I have the skills to do so. i know how to make effective environments learnt from my Unreal Project. I know how to use the software and navigate the UI. I am very good at making and adding materials as well as handling crashes and finding the source of crashes when adding in meshes.

The file size could be way to big and slow down the process of me trying to add it to my USB so I can take it home and work from there as well as work in college. Not much coding needs to be done other than the collectibles so it may take me a while to find out how to add a score system. I also need to learn a bit of animation which may take some time as the player bumps into story objects along the way.

O

I can learn how to add a easy HUD and UI from the score system that I will make. I can also learn more about adding and triggering animations. I have worked with some animations before this might give me an advantage and idea on how to make it work.

T

The file size might be way to big due to the assets that I need to add from the UE4 store. I also might run into severe FPS cuts due to all the assets I imagine need to be added whilst doing this project. I need to assure I have enough space on the Mac, my home PC and my USB before carrying out the task of creating this game.

Self Refelction

S

I have done plenty of Unreal Engine 4 work these past few months and even year. I have been experimenting with this software a lot to build up to FMP. This means I could be at an advantage as I know how to navigate the software, change block size, add materials, add meshes and render my world. I also know how to make an effective journal to document my work along the way. I always make sure to give evidence to my work as I'm going.

W

I might run into issues whilst using the software in regards to making blueprints, coding and managing crashes. This may cause me time and give me more work to do if I have to bounce over these hurdles. As I have experienced previously, crashing can be severe at times and could cause me issues for my work.

O

If I am coding or working with blueprints, this could benefit me for my future HNC course. This means that I am more prepared to make my games in Unreal Engine with some more assets and code involved. This also gives me an opportunity to get better at planning and working at a schedule. I will also get better at planning my maps and making effective maps on UE4.

T

I might hit a block along the way and lose all ideas of what I'm meant to be doing if I'm under pressure with time and coding. But this links with my opportunities as I have to learn to manage my time and maybe do the coding first to avoid this threat. The system or software could crash and cause me serious issues so I have to try and save regularly to avoid this issue of serious data loss.

I have done a SWOT analysis on every idea I have, and I have also done a self reflection to analyse my own technical skills before going forward with any of the ideas. On the SWOTS aimed at the ideas in mind, I have analysed the idea, what is good and bad, and how that might effect my time and work for the weeks ahead. A SWOT consists of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunity's and Threats. So I am looking at the strengths of the project and idea, the weakness, what might let me down or might be cut out of the final idea, opportunity's, so what I can learn from what I am doing, so if I have to learn code for any of the projects, I have an opportunity to. And finally the threats. These are events that could happen that might make me lose loads of time or cut me back majorly.

On my self reflection, I specifically outlined what I expect from myself going forward with unreal and how important it is to me to make the best of the time I have. I will be going into the HNC course next year and only need a Pass, however, my target grade is a Merit and that is what I desire and want to finish with. I explain my past experiences, let downs with my technical skills and potentially the loss of time depending on which idea I go forward with.
