When brainstorming and mind mapping Elements of the World, I had come up with various ideas of a coin collecting type of game. I had the idea to collect all the crystal that represent the Elements of the World. The player would be placed in this lobby or starting area if you will and would have to take tasks and do puzzles in 4 different rooms. As they progressed, the puzzles got harder and more challenging. At the end of each room, after completing puzzles, the player could retrieve the crystal. All of the elements include Earth, Fire. I wanted to have a panel at the end of the game that the player has to encounter. They have to place all the crystals on it and one of the 3 ideas brainstormed would appear.

I started to branch out into a more fantasy related theme. With this theme, I had a open world related area in mind. I had thoughts to make the area feel open world. A little idea was to have one area the player could move around in, but everywhere else if off bounds like the skybox areas etc. To make it into a fantasy game, I had the idea to add gems and pottery, taking inspiration from games like Zelda as a big example. To make into the theme of fantasy, I thought adding assets like Dungeons, Mythical Creatures and Gems would give it a boost into the fantasy theme. Even subtle detail such as dragons flying around could immerse the player into this world of fantasy.

The initial idea was to have this theme be "Nature" but then after making the mind map, I decided to call it realism. I was mainly focusing on the environment with the clear paths in the forests and the collectables. I explained how I wanted a horror story in there somewhere that relate with the collectables that you pick up along the way. The notes you collect reveal a murder mystery that turns out to be real and happend at the players location. In the enviroment, the player will find objects and notes to back up this mystery. The reason why I added realism as its theme is because I want to make realistic environments for the player to walk around in as well as discovering a crime that can also be done and has been committed in real life.

Genre Research

I am very much interested in the Mystery, Horror and Adventure genres as they appeal to some ideas that I have. Im glad I came up with some examples as they will help me come up with an initial idea in the long run. I already have an idea in mind. I am leaning more towards the Realism theme as I would like to make a map in Unreal Engine 4 and I like the concept I came up with. The Initial idea will be in the artist research tab. I will have my Initial idea, some form of vision for the setting and environment, then the artist research which will help me come up with ideas for the surrounding area.
MoodBoards

Dungeon Leading to the room of elements
Crystal of elements placed in each level
Mythical setting surrounding the area
Mountains in a "Sky Box" area, the player can see but cant get to it
Another Crystal type Idea
Fire, Water, Rock and Lightning element

Storage boxes/SavePoints
Dragon, flys around the play area - Cannot be interacted with
Goblins protecting the gems from you as well as mages in the watch towers
Chest containing gems
Gems, a collectable for the player to go and find
Watch Tower area as guidance

Resemblense of life, loss of life and the cruelty of life
A bloody axe the player can find that links in with the story
Caving system that uncovers more mysteries
Cliffs and forests to give an idea for the setting
Sign posts with notes on that the player must collect
These mind maps and mood boards help me to grasp a general idea of all the different themes I have in mind. You can see in my mind maps that I have tried to add the most appropriate words to this idea that could inspire me and influence me if I was to go forward with said idea. The mind maps are visually there to help me understand what the setting must look like and to inspire me to model a level using assets alike. I have tried to add key words and annotations to my work here to give more examples or explanation on the theme/genre.
This theme research has helped me decide and pick out the right theme for me. These themes that I researched and talked about are the ones I was interested the most, they are the ones I had in depth ideas for. This page is going to help me decide on a theme and decide which idea is more impacting than the others.
